Core 1 Lecture: Infection Prevention and Control in Dentistry - A New Standard

Infection prevention and control (IPAC) is a hot topic in dental offices. The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario has a new Standard of Practice, Infection Prevention and Control in the Dental Office, which was revised to align with all public health requirements. This course will review the background behind the new standard and give you and your staff the resources and tools needed to efficiently and easily implement IPAC best practices into your dental practice. Learning Objectives: • An understanding of the college’s Standard of Practice, Infection Prevention and Control in the Dental Office • Disinfection, sterilization, reprocessing and documentation • How to implement IPAC best practices into the dental practice.

Dr. Chris Swayze
HBSc, DDS, MBA, Manager, Reports, Professional Conduct and Regulatory Affairs, Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario

Dr. Chris Swayze graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Western Ontario in 1993. He subsequently obtained his MBA for Science and Technology from Queen’s University in 2000. Dr. Swayze joined the staff of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) in 2002 and held numerous positions. Most recently, Dr. Swayze was the Manager, Report, in the Professional Conduct and Regulatory Affairs Department. In his role as Manager, he was responsible for overseeing a team of dentists who investigated dentists with respect to allegations of professional misconduct, including infection prevention and control investigations. Dr. Swayze was a member of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s (MOHLTC) Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Knowledge Translation and Exchange Working Group, the Working Group revising the College’s IPAC Standard, and he worked collaboratively with Public Health Ontario (PHO) and the MOHLTC on IPAC issues related to dentistry. Dr. Swayze was also the contact person at the College for the 35 Public Health Units (PHU) with respect to IPAC investigations in dental offices. He is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Medical Device Reprocessing (CAMDR) and the CSA Group Technical Committee on Medical Device Reprocessing. Dr. Swayze has presented extensively on infection prevention and control and has been the keynote speaker at several events. Dr. Swayze continues to be involved in IPAC education and understands the regulatory and Ministry requirements for dentists.

This is a Core 1 course.   Any arrivals after 2:15 pm will be awarded a Core 2 certificate of attendance.
