Cost, Insurance and the CDCP
The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on what’s needed to correct your bite. Your orthodontist will explain the cost before you start, and most offices offer ways to spread payments out.
What affects the cost
The problem
How complex the bite problem is, and whether the jaws as well as the teeth need correcting.
Length of treatment
Longer treatment means more appointments and adjustments.
Type of appliance
Metal, ceramic or lingual braces, or clear aligners.
Phases of treatment
Some children have an early phase and a later phase. Retainers after treatment may be included or charged separately.
Ask for a written treatment plan that shows the total fee, what’s included, and how payments are scheduled.

Dental benefits
Many workplace dental plans include some orthodontic coverage. Before you start, ask your plan:
- What percentage of orthodontic treatment is covered?
- Is there a lifetime maximum for orthodontics?
- Are there age limits, or waiting periods?
- Do you need a pre-determination before treatment starts?
Your orthodontist’s office can usually help with the forms and treatment codes your insurer needs.
Other ways to manage cost
- Payment plans: most offices spread payments over the course of treatment.
- Health Care Spending Accounts: if your employer offers one, it can cover costs your plan doesn’t.
- Tax credit: out-of-pocket orthodontic expenses may qualify for the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)
Orthodontic services are not currently covered by the CDCP. The Government of Canada lists orthodontic services as “currently not available” under the plan.
The CDCP helps eligible Canadian residents pay a portion of the cost of a wide range of other oral health care services, such as check-ups, cleanings and fillings. If you’re enrolled, you can still use it for that care with your dentist during orthodontic treatment.
Plan rules change from time to time. Check the Government of Canada’s CDCP information and your own benefits for current details. This page is general information only.
